The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Japan sets the Japan visa photo requirements, which follow the biometric photo rules defined by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Document 9303. Only photos adhering to these specifications are eligible for applications. But don't worry — our Japan visa photo editor applies all the rules listed below automatically, including the required size, crop, framing, head positioning, and background. All you need to do is upload a well-made selfie.
Number of Photos
Two photos are required with Japanese visa applications.
Recency
The photo must be taken within the past 6 months to accurately reflect the applicant's appearance.
Photo Size
Passport photo size is required with Japanese visa applications — depending on a particular consulate, the accepted sizes are 45x45 mm (1.77 × 1.77 inches), 35x45 mm (1.38 × 1.77 inches), or 2x2 inches (5.08 × 5.08 cm). The head must take 70-80% of the image and measure between 32 and 36 mm (1.26-1.42 inches).
Color
Japan photo must be submitted in color only.
Background
A plain white background is required with Japanese visa applications. It must be evenly lit and free from patterns, textures, and shadows. Some consulates allow a blue background, but it's better to submit a photo with a white background, according to the MOFA standard, to avoid rejections.
Lighting
Only professional, good lighting is required for a Japan visa picture. It mustn't cast shadows on the applicant's face or background, and naturally reflect the skin tones and hair color.
Positioning and Framing
The applicant must be facing forward, with the face fully visible and square to the camera. Avoid tilting or moving when a Japan visa photo is being taken.
Facial Expression
An applicant must maintain a neutral facial expression with eyes open and mouth closed. Smiling, showing teeth, or any exaggerated expressions aren't permitted in a photo for Japanese visa.
Attire, Head Coverings, and Accessories
Wear conservative clothing in darker colors. Avoid too formal or bright clothes with large lettering or symbols. Military or camouflage wear isn't allowed on a Japanese visa photo. Headwear isn't allowed, unless worn daily for religious or medical reasons. In this case, it shouldn't obstruct facial features.
Glasses
Glasses are discouraged on Japan visa photos. Keep them off to increase the chance of approval, but if you must wear glasses for medical reasons, provide a signed certificate from your medical provider proving the reason for wearing glasses. Sunglasses, tinted glasses (even for medical reasons), and colored lenses aren't allowed on Japanese visa photos.
Print Quality
Only photos printed on matte photographic paper are accepted. Photos printed on regular paper on home printers aren't accepted.
Digital Quality
High resolution of at least 300 DPI, sharp focus, no visible pixels or noise. File format — JPEG or PNG, recommended file size — 240 kBytes.
What is Japan Visa Photo Dresscode?
Following the cultural values of Japan, respect the traditions and wear formal, conservative clothing in your Japanese visa picture. Dress in darker colors, and give preference to collared clothing. Avoid open shoulders and accessories like scarves that cover your neck or parts of the face. Modest jewelry, like small earrings and necklaces, is allowed, but any jewelry or piercing accessories that obstruct the face must be taken off. Military wear, camouflage, is prohibited on Japanese visa photos.

With the convenient online Japan visa photo tool PhotoGov, you can skip the hassle and expense of visiting a photo studio. Simply follow the steps below, take a selfie at home, upload it to our platform, and receive a visa-compliant Japanese photo in under a minute.
Find a good spot for taking your Japan visa photo. Ensure that the area is well-lit and that you are standing against a neutral background — a wall by a window works best.
Dress properly. Put on formal clothing in darker colors. Head coverings may be worn only for religious and medical reasons. Take off your glasses. Keep your facial expression neutral, eyes open, and mouth closed, and look directly into the camera.
Set up the camera or the smartphone. If you have a tripod, it's best to use it, setting your digital camera or the phone's camera on timer. In this case, use the back camera and stand about 2 metres (6.56 feet) from the camera. If taking a selfie, you can use the front camera, holding it about 40–50 cm (16–20 inches) away from your face.

Frequently Asked Questions
The official Japan tourist visa photo size is 45x45 mm (1.77 × 1.77 inches). However, some consulates require a 35x45 mm (1.38 × 1.77 inches), or a 2x2 inches (5.08 × 5.08 cm) size. Always double-check the required size before your application to avoid rejections.
4.5-4.5 cm is the size required by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. However, some embassies and consulates may request a 3.5x4.5 cm or a 5.08 × 5.08 cm size as the preferred ones. Double-check with your local Japanese consulate in advance.
Yes, a 2x2 inches is widely accepted as the Japan visa picture size by consulates in the United States and some other countries, for example, India. However, it is not the common size — most of the consulates accept 45x45 mm (1.77 × 1.77 inches), required by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. 35x45 mm (1.38 × 1.77 inches) is also accepted, depending on the country.
You can check a sample Japan visa picture (or a detailed list of photo specifications) at the website of your local Japanese consulate. Google "Japanese consulate near me," and visit the relevant page. For example, if you're in Mumbai, check the Mumbai Consulate's page. The sample picture listed on this page adheres to all 2026 official standards, too.
No. You cannot smile in your Japan visa picture. Your facial expression must be neutral, with the mouth closed and the eyes open.
Yes. But only if it's taken correctly, and then converted into a Japan visa size photo by a professional Japan visa photo editor:
Firstly, take a correct selfie. Using the back camera or having someone else take the photo is better as it results in a better picture.
Secondly, use PhotoGov to convert your selfie into Japan visa photo online for free. Upload the selfie to our platform, wait for about 30 seconds, and receive a digital or a printable file, ready to be approved.
Do not include a simple selfie (taken on your phone) with your application! This is a very common reason for a rejection. Use professional services like PhotoGov to adjust your selfie to a compliant image.
Yes, but only if they don't interfere with your natural appearance in any way. The reflective makeup that can cast shadows or cause glare isn't allowed. Jewelry must be modest and small in size. Any accessories that obstruct your facial features, neck, or ears aren't allowed. Piercing accessories that obstruct your facial parts must be removed.
Use the PhotoGov service to convert your selfie into a printable Japan visa photo. Choose a PDF printable file upon checkout, and print your photos on high-quality matte photographic paper. Note that photos printed at home on regular paper aren't accepted.
No problem. Head coverings worn for religious reasons are allowed on biometric photos. However, make sure that they don't cover up your face from chin to forehead, or obstruct your facial features.
